Executive Summary

Target Audience

The construction of this memorial, stalled for years, has garnered significant interest. Cape Cod
residents value their 400-year seafaring heritage. Numerous individuals and businesses have
offered support to honor those lost at sea.

Future of the Fishermen’s Memorial Foundation

The Fishermen’s Memorial Foundation, after raising the money to erect the Fishermen’s
memorial, will continue to raise money and seek grants for donations to local charities to help
fellow Cape Codders in their time of need.

Company Description

The Fishermen’s Memorial was conceived in November 1976 after the loss of the F/V PATRICIA
MARIE, which claimed the lives of seven Provincetown men. This tragedy deeply impacted the
community, leading to the creation of the Fishermen’s Memorial Foundation in August 2023.
The foundation aims to honor and preserve the fishing heritage of Provincetown and Truro with
a statue listing the names of those lost.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Fishermen’s Memorial Foundation is to secure funding and erect a bronze
monument on the waterfront in Provincetown, MA. This sculpture will serve as a tribute to the
men, women, and children from Provincetown and Truro who lost their lives at sea. We aim to
achieve this goal through a combination of donations, grants, and fundraising initiatives.

Market Research

Industry

The Fishermen’s Memorial Foundation has contracted Brodin Studios, Inc. of Kimball,
Minnesota to construct the Fishermen’s Memorial which will stand at the foot of MacMillan Pier
in Provincetown.
Brodin Studios, Inc. has constructed military and public servant memorials in the past, making
it a good fit for our mission. The final sculpture will capture the dignity, sorrow, and hope tied to
the legacy of these men, women, and children that perished at sea.

Process Overview

3D Scanning of the Dory:

The process begins with a precise 3D scan of an authentic dory fishing boat that is specific to
Cape Cod’s heritage. This technology allows for the capture of every detail of the dory down to
the wood grain, seams, and even any subtle imperfections that give the boat its character and
historical authenticity. The 3D scan creates a high-resolution digital model that will serve as the
foundation for the entire project.
By using this method, we are assured that the final bronze sculpture will be an exact replica of
the original dory, with every curve, line, and detail preserved. The precision of 3D scanning
technology eliminates any margin for error, guaranteeing that the finished piece will be an
accurate and faithful homage to Provincetown and Truro’s fishing heritage.

3D Modeling & Modifications:

Once the 3D scan is complete, the data is processed to create a digital model of the dory. This
model can be viewed and modified as needed, allowing our committee to suggest any artistic
adjustments or additions before physical sculpting begins. Renderings will be provided that
offer a clear visualization of how the sculpture will appear in its final form, ensuring complete
alignment between the artistic vision and the technical execution.

3D Printing & Foam Sculpting:

After approval of the 3D model, advanced 3D printing technology will be used to fabricate the
highly detailed sections of the sculpture, such as the hull, oars, and other key elements. For less
detailed areas, sculpting foam will be used, which allows for the creation of larger forms
efficiently. This combination of 3D printing and sculpting foam creates a perfect base for the
final statue and expedites the production process while maintaining accuracy.

Clay Sculpting and Wax Work:

The printed and foam sections are then covered in clay, where skilled sculptors enhance and
refine the details. Every plank and texture of the dory will be meticulously shaped and perfected
at this stage, ensuring that even the finest elements of the boat are preserved. The final clay
model is then molded, and hot wax is poured into the molds, forming precise wax positives of
the sculpture. These wax pieces are where the ultimate details and textures are added.

Bronze Casting:

The wax models are gated to a tree structure and undergo a ceramic shell process, where they
are dipped multiple times in a ceramic slurry and coated in silica sand. This process forms a
hard ceramic shell, which is then fired in a kiln to melt out the wax and harden the mold. This
negative space within the shell is where the Everdur 873 silicon bronze is poured. The bronze is
allowed to cool before the ceramic shell is broken away, leaving the bronze replica of the dory.

Welding and Metal Finishing:

Once all the bronze pieces are cast, they are welded together, and the welds are ground down to
make seamless joints. The texture is applied, and the surface is refined to match the original
scanned details. After welding, the statue is sandblasted to clean the surface and prepare it for
the patina.

Patina and Protective Coating:

A two-step potash-ferric patina process will be applied, with any accent areas receiving
additional highlighting during metal preparation. The entire sculpture is sealed with a protective
clear coat to ensure it withstands the elements and preserves the patina of the bronze.

Installation:

Finally, the completed sculpture will be transported and installed at the memorial site. Stainless
steel rods will secure the sculpture to the base, inserted into pre-drilled holes and anchored with
epoxy to ensure stability and longevity. The Brodin team will handle every aspect of the installation, ensuring that the sculpture is safely and securely placed in its final resting spot,
ready to inspire and commemorate those lost at sea.

Sculpture Design

The Fisherman’s Memorial sculpture will capture the essence of an empty dory atop a rolling wave, symbolizing those lost at sea. Using advanced 3D scanning technology, the final bronze sculpture will be an exact replica of the Grand Banks dory, a historic boat used on Cape Cod two hundred years ago. The dory that will be used for scanning is in Wellfleet, MA. The 3D scan will preserve every angle and contour of the original boat which is a Grand Banks dory.

This is the sacred spot for the future Fishermen’s Memorial honoring those lost at sea from Provincetown and Truro.
